MAN ACTING AS FAKE DOCTOR FACES 17 MORE FELONY CHARGES
TWO NEW VICTIMS ADDED TO THE COMPLAINT, 9 TOTAL VICTIMS
San Francisco – District Attorney George Gascón announced today that two additional victims have come forward in the case against Carlos Guzmangarza, age 49, of San Francisco, a man who is charged with practicing medicine without a license, stealing the identity of a physician’s assistant and causing great bodily harm to some of his victims.
“Thanks to the widespread attention this case has received, more victims have forward,” said District Attorney Gascón. “Our work will not be complete until my office brings justice for each victim.”
According to court documents, the defendant, Carlos Guzmangarza, operated a dermatology clinic on Mission Street in San Francisco called the Derma Clinic. He assumed the identity of a physician’s assistant with a similar name as the defendant’s and claimed that his clinic is operated by himself and a doctor. Neither the real doctor, who practices in the Bay Area, nor the real physician’s assistant, is affiliated with the defendant’s illegal clinic.
Today, prosecutors amended the complaint a third time to add two additional victims making it a total of nine victims. The defendant is charged with five felony counts including violating Business and Professions Code section 2052(a) (practicing medicine without a license), violating Penal Code section 529 (false impersonation) for allegedly transacting with the victims in the assumed character of Carlos Guzman, violating Penal Code section 530.5 (identity theft), violating Penal Code section 245(a)(4) (assault with force likely to cause great bodily harm), and violating Penal Code section 487(a) (grand theft).
The defendant is also charged with twelve felony counts including violating Business and Professions Code section 2052(a) (practicing medicine without a license), violating Penal Code section 245(a)(4) (assault with force likely to cause great bodily harm), three counts of violating Penal Code Section 289 (a)(1) (sexual penetration by foreign or unknown object against the victim’s will), three counts of Penal Code section 288a (unlawful oral copulation), three counts Penal Code section 261 (rape), and violating Penal Code section 487(a) (grand theft).
Guzmangarza was first arraigned on December 23, 2011. He was re-arraigned on new charges on March 8, 2012. His bail remains at $1,000,000. Defendant now faces over 30 years state prison. Guzmangarza’s next court date is July 17, 2012. Assistant District Attorney Evan Ackiron is the Prosecutor.
